How to win the battle with your bra straps.

I’ve spoken in previous blogs about the old days when I was wearing the wrong size bra and my bra moved around all day and I was continually fighting with my straps to keep them on my shoulders. My bra guru helped me solve this by sister sizing me from a 38B to a 34D cutting 4 inches off my band and my straps.

It makes sense when you stop to think about it. When the band gets bigger, the whole bra gets wider and that includes the straps. People generally associate more comfort with a bigger and less tight band so they go bigger without realizing the consequent impact on the rest of the fit. It seems comfortable and you might not notice that your straps may be angled inward on your shoulders. As you move around throughout the day reaching for things, bending, twisting and living your life, the straps naturally gravitate back to perpendicular and subsequently off your shoulders.

There is another related issue that people can have when going to a larger band size for comfort. If you have picked a style like the one below that doesn’t have a fully adjustable strap, as the bra gets bigger the straps will become too long to make them tight enough to stay up on the shoulder and give you proper support.

What if you’re already in the best size for you or you have a medical condition that prevents you from wearing something snug enough to stay in place? If this is the case there is still hope. The next step in strap slippage prevention is to look at the brand and also style within brand. In my opinion, Wacoal is one of the best brands for people with narrow or sloping shoulders. They have some of the narrowest set straps of any bras on the market. They are relatively easier to find in stores than some other brands as well. You can see in the pictures below where the Wacoal straps are attached to the cup especially in their popular Visual Effects Minimizer style (bottom picture). Compare these straps to the online brand Third Love for example. You can see those straps are attached toward the outside of the cup. If you look at the backs of the Wacoal bra styles pictured, you can see how much more close set the straps are in the back of the bras as well on the two pictured Wacoal styles. These differences in structure will work wonders to help keep those straps from slipping!

Even the Wacoal Lace Affair style (top picture) that has a wider strap ➡️ positioning in the front, has back straps that hit closer to the center hooks than the Third Love styles pictured below. ⬇️

The Elomi styles pictured here (Morgan in white and Smooth in black) are relatively newer styles in the brand for fuller busts and they’ve done a great job “kicking-in” the straps in the back so that they are more likely to stay on the shoulder.

There are a couple of other solutions for keeping straps where they belong. One is a bra with a convertible “J-Hook” on the back straps. If your bra doesn’t have this feature, another possibility is a strap connector to hold the straps together and make them tighter. These can be good solutions but also require a certain amount of dexterity and flexibility so they may not be the most practical solution for everyone.
